Scuba diving
During grad school—in a landlocked state—I got my Open Water certification and haven’t looked back. I’d been interested in diving since seeing divers in Massachusetts on vacation, but only got around to getting certified when I thought I’d be able to dive in Nicaragua during fieldwork. As it turns out, I didn’t go diving in Nicaragua, but I have gone many other places both abroad and in the US. Some trips were specifically for diving, like the Florida Keys or Bonaire; other times it was coincidental with another trip, like Catalina Island, Massachusetts, Hawai’i, or Greece. I dive less frequently since I moved to Alaska, but I got my Dry Suit and Advanced Certifications while here and look forward to putting those to use!
